Why is Stretching After a Workout So Important?

You’ve just finished a tough lifting session and you’re ready to go home and shower. You know you should probably stretch first, but your mind is already on the next item on your to-do list, and it’s ok if you skip it just this one time, right? But when was the last time you really stretched after a workout? The long-term effects from not stretching after intense workouts can eventually lead to strained muscles and inflexibility that could lead to injury.

Benefits of Stretching After a Workout

Lifting weights forces your muscles to contract repeatedly, leaving them shorter and tighter with the buildup of lactic acid. Lengthening and stretching your body after a workout helps to increase circulation and reset your natural posture.

Muscle soreness is one of the main reasons why people skip their workouts the following day. Stretching helps relieve muscle soreness so you’ll be more optimistic about getting back into the gym.

Psychological Wellbeing

With the exception of yogis, most people don’t realize how stretching can improve your mindset and attitude well after you leave them gym. Breathing and stretching allows you to look inward and relax. It calms your nerves and relieves stress. It also brings your awareness to the parts of your body that may need extra attention, either with extra stretching or medical consultation.

The Right Way to Stretch

First, focus on the group of muscles you just worked on. If it was legs day, lengthen and hold a 30-second stretch in your hamstrings on each leg. Then, spend 30 seconds holding a stretch in your calves, and so on. Second, stretch the muscles around the areas you just worked. For example, spend 30 seconds on your hip flexors. Finally, be sure to breath deeply and lengthen your entire body to eliminate any leftover lactic acid. Remember, you’ll feel a tightness when stretching, but you should not feel pain.
